Mobile data growth rates in Canada
November 3rd, 2007 | Published in Mobile
One day last week I looked at my cell phone and noticed that I’d got one new text message. It was from my operator, of course, announcing that I’d got a new message in my voicemail. In three months of living here, I’ve got used to the idea that I no longer receive text messages from my friends except my wife, no longer use services by SMS or be able to send or receive MMS.
That must soon be changing though. According to Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, data growth rates are currently exceeding 50% per quarter. Text messaging services were launched in Canada only in 2002 (in Finland the year was 1994), but volumes have doubled each year since the launch, and Canadians are now sending approximately 30 million text messages per day. And Canadians are now learning to use 3G products and services as well.
So I’m expecting it won’t be long till SMS/MMS services gain popularity here not just among ordinary cell phone users but also among advertisers and mobile services companies.
